Where Jesus Was Baptised How To Get Here - What To See
Bethany beyond Jordan, or the Baptism Site, is one of Jordan's most important Christian Holy Paces and has become a major pilgrimage destination in the past few years.
It is not only believed that Jesus Christ was baptised here in the Jordan River by John the Baptist, but also this is the location where all three entities of the Holy Trinity manifested their physical presence to humanity.
Thousands of Christians gather every year at the biblical site of Bethany in January for the Epiphany and Theophany celebrations to commemorate the day Jesus' baptism.
In the Baptism Archaeological Park pilgrims and visitors can explore the ancient remains of churches, baptism pools and mosaics.
The new Baptism Center
The new Baptism Center was opened in March 2009 and is owned and managed by the Baptism Site Commission of Jordan.
It is available for use by all Christian denomitations that practises baptism by immersion.
The Pope's Visit
Pope John Paul II visited the Baptism Site in March 2000.

Several new churches are currently under construction at Bethany beyond Jordan:
- a Russian pilgrimage house,
- a Roman Catholic church,
- an Anglican Church,
- an Armenian Church and
- a Coptic Church.
Useful Information
- Opening Hours: daily from 8.00h till 18.00h in summer and 16.00h in winter time. Last entry is 1 hour before closing.
- Entrance Fee: 2 JD for Jordanians, 3 JD for Arab nationals and 7 JD for other nationalities.
Getting here
- The site can be reached by car from the Dead Sea area.
- Mariam Hotel in Madaba offers organized trips by taxi combined with visit to the Dead Sea and Mount Nebo.
- Private tours are also available from Amman.
