A swim in the Dead Sea is Jordan's second "must see & do" thing - right after visiting Petra

Mind you, swimming is nearly impossible: the water is so dense it pushes you up to the surface to float.

This highly therapeutic salt water attracts thousands of visitors from around the world each year.

Many of them just come for the fun of floating at the lowest point of the Earth but there are a lot of people who seek and find cures for their health problems.

The Dead Sea was one of the world's first health resorts for Herod the Great, who built and rebuilt several fortresses and palaces on the western bank.

Today the 4- and 5-star hotels at the Dead Sea offer wide range of medical and wellness services but you can enjoy the benefits of the water on a low budget as well.

Name in Arabic: Al-Bahr Al Mayyit
Name in Hebrew: Yam Ha-Melah

The Dead Sea is a 67 kms long salt lake without any natural outflows.

Its surface and shores are 423 meters below sea level, which is the lowest elevation on the Earth.

It's called "Dead" because its water is 8.6 times saltier than the ocean and no animals or plants can live in such environment.

Due to the reduced quantity of inflowing water from the Jordan River the Dead Sea is shrinking rapidly, its level is dropping at the rate of cca. 1 meter per year.

So make sure you visit the Dead Sea in Jordan before it dies!

The Dead Sea is located in the Middle East, between Palestine and Israel to the West and Jordan to the East.

GPS co-ordinates: 31° 20' 0" N and 35° 30' 0" E

The touristic areas - hotels and beaches - are on the northern part, close to Amman.
