This is one of the most frequently asked questions I hear from travellers who wish to discover Jordan at their own pace with the help of a private diver.
Why do you need a private driver in Jordan?
There are many advantages of hiring a driver for your travels in Jordan:
- You don't have to rely on public transport
Public transport in Jordan is not really convenient for tourist, especially for those with time limitations.
There ARE scheduled air-conditioned coaches running between the major cities several times a day, but the rest of the country is only serviced by public minibuses that don't have fixed timetables.
Instead, they depart when they are full or when their driver feels like. Plus they stop anywhere along the route where somebody wants to get on or off.
Many of the touristic sites are only accessible by car: the Dead Sea area, for example, or the Desert Castles, Bethany beyond Jordan, Mount Nebo - just to mention a few.
- You don't have to drive yourself
Some people find it intimidating to drive in a foreign country - especially if the local culture, driving habits and the roadsigns are so much different from what they got used to in their home countries.
Also, you can enjoy the journey more when you don't have to worry about the traffic or being lost.

If you want quick reply from the drivers, it is better to call them or send SMS. They spend a lot of time on the road far away from the internet and they can't check their emails very often.
Some of the drivers in this Directory might be licenced tour guides but many of them are DRIVERS.
They have a licence to drive you safely from one place to another but you can't always expect full guiding services from them for all tourist sites in Jordan.
When you contact a driver or guide, always clear all the details: what kind of service is he providing, what is included in the price and what is not.
Most of the drivers are very experienced and they tell you interesting stories about the country, its history and people, traditions, the everyday life etc. They might even invite you to their home to eat with their family or just to have a tea.
These are the nice little things that you will never experience if you travel with a large group.
On the other hand, if you are really into historical facts and dates, I advise you to rely on a good guide book or local official guides who are available to hire at touristic sites like Petra or Jerash.
